The History of the Toyota Camry

2014 Toyota Camry
The History of the Toyota Camry begins almost 35 years ago at the Tokyo Auto Show.

While last week we highlighted the 2015 Toyota Camry, this week we want to take a second to reflect on where the Camry started and how it got to what it is today.

Toyota Celica, the predecessor of the Toyota Camry, was introduced in 1970 at the Tokyo Auto Show. Over the next 10 years, the two-door Celica went through several updates including a few facelifts. By 1980, Toyota decided that they wanted a four-door version of their two-door Celica and decided to call the new model the Camry, thus officially starting the history of the Toyota Camry as we know it today.

The Toyota Camry became a model in its own right rather than just the Toyota Celica Camry in 1982 when the first generation models were built in Japan. The Toyota Camry wasn’t sold in the US or the UK until 1983 when this first generation Camry came out.

In 1987, Toyota created the second-generation Camry and they upgraded its horsepower and created a smoother ride experience through the Camry’s new transmission. In 1988 Toyota added a V6 option to the Toyota Camry and with the Camry’s American popularity, Toyota decided to start building Camrys in the United States instead of just importing them from Japan. By 1992, the Toyota Camry was redesigned yet again to account for American’s love of bigger sedans.

In 1997, all of the hard work that Toyota had put into the Camry paid off, and the 1997 Toyota Camry became the best-selling car in the United States. In 2002, Toyota unveiled another Camry redesign with a sleeker exterior appearance and more spacious interior. Five years later, Toyota revamped the Camry again, giving it a more distinctive exterior appearance. 2007 also was the year Camry introduced its hybrid model.

This brings us up today where we are anxiously awaiting the 2015 Camry and its new exterior panels. Learn more about this 2015 Toyota Camry on our website or just stop into our dealership!

Coming Soon: 2015 Toyota Camry

2015 Toyota Camry
The sleek exterior of the 2015 Toyota Camry is made of completely new exterior panels, excluding the roof turret, giving it a new modern look while still maintaining the feel that Camry owners have grown to love.

The 2015 Toyota Camry launches in the United States the second week of September, and we couldn’t be more excited. As you know, the 2015 Toyota Camry has been the #1 car in American for years and we can see why. It’s sleek exterior, spacious interior and Toyota dependability have made a difference to all the loyal Toyota buyers out there. Last week at a press conference, Robert Carter, the senior VP of Toyota’s automotive operations in the United States had this to say:

“This is a mega change to Camry and the most expensive mid-cycle change in our company’s history,” Carter started. “We are fully committed to keeping Camry No. 1 for a long time to come.”

The 2015 Camry has an updated exterior appearance with all new exterior panels except the roof turret while maintaining the same frame as its 2014 model. The powertrain is the same and the interior changes are more minimal. While the changes for the 2015 Toyota Camry might not seem drastic, Carter hinted at big changes to come in the future.

“The next chapter in Toyota’s history will focus on design, fun-to-drive and killer interiors,” he said.

Be sure to stop by Haddad Toyota to get behind the wheel of the new 2015 Toyota Camry in late September and take a test drive to see what all the hype is about.

#1 For A Reason – Toyota Camry

2014 Toyota Camry
The 2014 Toyota Camry is one of the safest cars on the road, receiving a 5-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It’s over all safety and top quality parts have helped the Camry be at the top of the list of new cars for U.S. buyers for the past 12 years!

Did you know that the Toyota Camry is the best-selling car in the United States? In fact, it’s been the bestselling car in the U.S. for the past 12 years and the 2015 Toyota Camry coming out later this year promised to deliver more of the same dependable, reliable performance that we have come to expect from this great car. In fact, over 90% of all Camrys sold in the last ten years are still on the roads today! (We suspect the other 10% were used for movie stunt productions and therefore blown up and unable to be driven after such intense Hollywood stunts).

The Toyota Camry time and time again has proven its long-term worth and people are taking notice. IntelliChoice, an automotive analysis company, rated the 2014 Toyota Camry as the having the highest retained value in its class.

While all of this is great, we can’t sell the Camry any better than it can sell itself so be sure to come by Haddad Toyota to test drive the best car in the U.S. today. You won’t forget it!

Toyota Camry Sales Approach 50,000 Units: 1 per Minute

2014 Toyota Camry
In May, Toyota sold almost 50,000 Camrys, equaling one every 52 seconds.

Toyota Camry Sales approached 50,000 units last month (49,584 exactly), with sales up 26 percent and topping its segment by over 10,000 units.

Think about that for a second: fifty thousand cars in a single month. That means Americans, on average, drove away with a Camry every 52 seconds of every hour of every day of May.

One might wonder what makes the Camry so popular, except that most people already do—after all, it’s not been the best-selling car for 15 of the last 16 years for no reason.

Recently, the Camry’s quality has once again been reaffirmed by top honors in the J.D. Power IQS and VDS studies as well as its five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It was also named “Best Midsize Car for the Money” list by U.S. News and World Report and “Most Popular” by Edmunds.com.

“It’s America’s best-selling car, but more important is the one Camry in the customer’s driveway,” said Bob Carter, vice president of automotive operations, Toyota Motor Sales. “The one Camry that gets you and your family to work, school, vacation, the Camry that works in a business enterprise, the one Camry you trust to be reliable and help keep your family safe.”

The 2015 Camry arrives at Haddad Toyota later this year, so stop by now to test drive a 2014 or come by in a few months to get behind the wheel of a 2015 version !
